As Will Boehlke has often pointed out, the best way to coordinate shirts, ties, pocket squares, and suits or jackets is to choose items that complement one another but don’t match exactly.  While that’s a great standard to aim for, I think sometimes it’s OK just to go with the obvious match.  A shirt that has red and blue checks paired with a red tie with a blue stripe is a fairly obvious pairing, but sometimes simple and obvious coordination is good.

Suit: Kingsridge, thrifted, $20

Shirt: Brooks Brothers, thrifted, $5

Tie: Polo Ralph Lauren, thrifted, $5

Shoes: Johnston & Murphy Aristocraft, thrifted, $15

Tailoring: $15

Total: $60

If I’d paid retail prices: Easily $1000 or more.
